XIII (Redux)

XIII was originally released in 2012 under the ‘Dreamers Awake’ moniker but was remixed and released in a redux edition in 2019. Its conception was a long and troubled one. The songs are more experimental in nature, making heavy use of loops and minimalistic structures over more conventional songwriting.

The album deals with heavy themes - death, depression and survivor’s guilt - but acts as a sort of exorcism, resulting in at least a cathartic release of these energies rather than a wallowing in misery. Inspired in large part by the cornish landscape, the album tells a story of past lives, unexpected travel and joining dots through time and space.

After years of demoing, the recording process began in 2011 at the sadly defunct Deepsee Studios with Stuart Jarvis. The drums were played by talented session musician Matthew Hekker, who did the whole album in a day. Guitars, bass, vocals and synth were recorded at home over many months, with varying degrees of success. The song structures were very loose in nature and contiued to evolve over the course of the recording.

Elaine Round added flute (also recorded at Deepsee in 2012.) New vocals and reamped guitars were added, and then mixed and mastered by Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse in 2018.
